East Avenue
Historical Renovation Project—Adding on to a neighbor of the George Eastman
House
What started as a simple bump-out addition
ended up a masterpiece of design and creative use of materials.Originally,
the plans called for wood clapboard siding, but since the home
has a limestone façade, we chose to replicate the stone
and intricate wood detail of the original structure. Casting templates
from the existing stone, we molded our own stones, which can’t
be distinguished from the originals.
The true Venetian Plaster walls on the interior were
accented by Tiger Maple trim, which we salvaged from a local original
house-parts supplier.
We chose a rubber roof
system (EPDM) to protect the interior of the home and beautify
the outside by bringing together the positive qualities of a commercial
product and an historically appropriate copper metal-seam roofing
façade. The rubber roof was overlaid with Trex decking material,
so that the second floor roof can be used for an outdoor sitting
area overlooking the new hand-laid cobblestone patio below. |
